Diocesan Grant for Growth

Christ Church asked the diocese for financial support for 1988 in order to help put money behind its avowed intent to grow and develop.  The new parish could not support a full time rector and programs for growth.  The church was granted $10,000 for the year 1988.

Anchorage experienced economic decline in response to lower oil prices from 1985 to 1989 and loss of population as well.  Christ Church lost several families (and pledging units) but maintained a plateau of membership.  In 1990 the parochial report indicates 176 baptized members, 106 communicants in good standing and the attendance on Easter Sunday was 150.  Rent was increasing but the congregation was aware they could not continue as a renter and grow.  Lack of a building detracts from "identity" which is needed for growth.
